Article 35A: Separatists call for complete shutdown in Srinagar, restrictions imposed

SRINAGAR, AUG 30: In view of protests called by separatists to support Article 35A, several restrictions were imposed in Jammu and Kashmir’s Srinagar on Thursday.

A complete shutdown in the city has been called by separatist conglomerate Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) which is headed by Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umer Farooq and Yasin Malik.

The shutdown has been called for August 30 and 31 for protection of Article 35A. Commenting on the situation in Srinagar, the police in a statement said, “restrictions have been imposed in areas under the jurisdiction of Nowhatta, Khanyar, Rainawari, MR Gunj and Safa Kadal police stations.”

“Partial restrictions will remain in force in areas under Kralkhud and Maisuma police stations on Thursday and Friday,” the police added.

“The restrictions are purely preventive in nature and have been imposed to maintain law and order,” the police further said.

In addition, train services between Baramulla and Banihal have also been suspended amid shutdown in Srinagar for two days.

All entrance exams for admission to various post-graduate courses to be held on Thursday and Friday have been rescheduled by the University of Kashmir.

Various security arrangements have been made as police and paramilitary forces have been deployed in huge numbers.

The forces have been deployed in areas that have been placed under restrictions, along with other vulnerable places in the city and other parts of the Valley.

A bunch of petitions had challenged Article 35A in the Supreme Court. A three-judge bench of the apex court will hear the case on Friday.
